Energy Savings: No-Cost And Low-Cost Ways To Lower Your Heating Bills

Now that winter has hit southern Arizona, it’s time to take a look at your heating bill. While we have very mild winters in the Yuma area, it can get chilly, especially at night. Fortunately, there are several no-cost or low-cost steps you can take to see energy savings on your heating bill.
No-Cost Steps To Reduce Your Heating BillEnergy Savings: No-Cost And Low-Cost Ways To Lower Your Heating Bills

  • Lower your thermostat. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) states that for every eight hours that you reduce your thermostat’s temperature by one degree, you can save 2 percent from your heating bill. Set your thermostat as low as you can comfortably stand it when you’re home, and drop it another five to 10 degrees at night or if everyone will be out of the house for several hours.
  • Turn down your water heater. Just like your thermostat, your water heater uses energy for every degree it heats your water. In fact, according to the ACEEE, every 10 degrees of lowered water temperature saves 3-5 percent from your heating bill. Setting your water heater to 120 degrees makes an almost unnoticeable difference from a human perspective, but a significant one to the price of your heating bill.

Low-Cost Steps To Reduce Your Heating Bill

  • Fix your ductwork. If your heating system works by pumping heated air through ducts, you may be losing significant amounts of heat before it ever reaches you due to leaky or poorly fitted ductwork. For a low cost, you can purchase metal-backed tape or aerosol sealant to seal and fix your ducts.
  • Keep your heating system in good repair. Replacing dirty filters is a low-cost way to keep your heating system in good working order. Periodic maintenance, while a bit more expensive, not only helps increase energy savings but also helps avoid the expense of replacing your entire heating system.
