A Neat And Tidy Guide To Controlling Indoor Dust

Dust is something that all homeowners have to fend with, but some homes are more prone to dust than others. If your residence seems to constantly accumulate dust, there are a number of actions you can take to prevent dust from gathering, and to deal with it effectively as it occurs.

Start by getting rid of the places and objects in your home that accumulate and hold a lot of dust. Doing this will make other dust removal methods more effective and make indoor dust control easier in general. Some major areas to look at include:

  • Upholstered Furniture. Replace it with leather or vinyl. These materials are easy to clean, and unlike heavy fabric they do not hold large amounts of dust.
  • Heavy Drapes. These are dust magnets. Venetian blinds don’t attract nearly as much dust, and they are far easier to clean.
  • Wall-to-Wall Carpet. This is a big one. Thick carpet holds onto dust like you wouldn’t believe, and even frequent and thorough vacuuming will never get rid of all of it. Replacing carpeting with hardwood flooring will make your job infinitely easier. If you still want carpet, you can always invest in smaller, easier to clean area rugs.

Another thing you can do is have your HVAC equipment cleaned regularly. This includes your furnace and air conditioner. Annual maintenance will greatly reduce airborne dust. You might also want to upgrade the filters in your HVAC equipment, and be sure to change them often, especially during high-use seasons or if you have pets.

You probably don’t want to hear this, but one of the best ways to get rid of indoor dust is through dusting. Here are a few tips to make dusting more effective:

  • Start high and work your way down, so you can pick up dust as it settles.
  • Use a damp cloth and a small amount of a household cleaner to take care of dusting and cleaning all at once.
  • Dust every surface. Anything you leave behind will just be worse next time.
