Your Indoor Air: Do You Need An Electronic Air Cleaner, A UV Light System Or Both?

In climates like southwest Arizona, it’s not uncommon to have your air conditioner running for several months out of the year. While keeping your indoor climate at a steady temperature may make your home more comfortable, it can also have an impact on your indoor air quality. You may think of air pollution as solely an outdoor problem, but in fact, contaminants circulating throughout your home can have a big impact on your family’s health.Your Indoor Air: Do You Need An Electronic Air Cleaner, A UV Light System Or Both?

One way to keep the air in your home clean and fresh is to open windows and bring in fresh air, but this isn’t always possible, or comfortable, in the desert Southwest. A good long-term solution to improving your indoor air quality is to install an electronic air clear and/or a UV light system. These two systems tackle different air quality problems, so it’s important to understand the difference.

  • Electronic air cleaners use electrostatic interactions to remove unwanted particles from the air in your home. Airborne dirt, dust and other small particles typically carry an electronic charge. An oppositely charged collector plate draws in these particles and deposits them on the plate, which you can then clean.
  • UV light systems work in a different way. Rather than collecting particles, UV lights destroy organic pathogens such as bacteria, mold and viruses. However, they are not effective for removing dust and other non-living particles.

Depending on the types of contaminants you want to address, you may want to install one or both of these systems. Family members who are sensitive to bacteria and mold can benefit from the pathogen-killing effects of a UV light system, while an electronic air cleaner can reduce the amount of dust in your home. Advanced air filtration systems combine these two technologies with high-efficiency filters to trap and remove a range of particle sizes, while destroying the living organisms that can threaten your family’s heath.
