4 A/C Installation Factors That Make or Break Efficiency

Is an A/C installation in your near future? Make sure that you don’t end up with a raw deal. By understanding how certain installation factors can affect your system’s performance, you can take measures to ensure that your new A/C will run achieve its stated efficiency rating.

How does installation affect A/C efficiency?4 A/C Installation Factors That Make or Break Efficiency
A high seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) doesn’t necessarily guarantee that an air conditioner will operate at top performance values. This is because cooling equipment is tested and rated under controlled lab settings. During an actual field installation, several variables can affect how efficiently the air conditioner will actually run. Although some factors like climate cannot be controlled, others can be regulated by a qualified HVAC contractor. At the time of installation your heating and cooling professional should pay careful attention to:

  1. Airflow – Proper airflow is necessary in order for the desired temperature change to occur across the evaporator coil. Inadequate airflow can be caused by small or restrictive ducts as well as an improperly matched air handler. In order to avoid efficiency and comfort issues related to poor airflow your contractor should measure the actual flow of air and make any necessary adjustments.
  2. Refrigerant charge – Your HVAC professional should carefully follow manufacturer specifications with regards to refrigerant charge. Even if the system is only slightly overcharged or undercharged, the system’s SEER could be significantly reduced.
  3. Ductwork – Always make sure that your ducts are evaluated for leaks. Leaky ducts can negatively impact your air conditioner’s capacity and drive up utility bills. Additionally leaks in your ductwork can create uneven temperatures, moisture problems, and can put excess stress on your equipment.
  4. Equipment sizing – Never purchase or install an air conditioner without a Manual J load calculation. Manual J enables your contractor to determine the right-sized air conditioner for your home’s cooling and dehumidification needs. Undersized systems will struggle to meet your demands while oversized equipment will waste energy and provide uneven cooling.
