Fall Allergies Can be Tough to Get Under Control: The Right Filtration Can Help

Fall can be as difficult a season as any for allergy suffers. It’s the time of the year for weed pollens, which for many people translates into itchiness, watery eyes, runny noses, and an array of other discomforts. Having a good air filtration system in your Yuma area home can alleviate some of those symptoms. Along with tracking day-to-day pollen levels, closing your windows and keeping your home clean, air filters provide another defense against fall allergies. Any air purifier also carries the overall benefit of being useful for maintaining your general health.

No matter how cautious you are, when pollen counts are high, allergens and other unwanted particles will find a way into your home. What’s more, cleaning will often unsettle allergens already there, spreading them into the air and around thFall Allergies Can be Tough to Get Under Control: The Right Filtration Can Helpe house. Although it might be impossible to eliminate all of these allergy-causing particles, a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter can help rid you of up to 90 percent of particles below the designated size of 0.3 microns.

If you’re interested in a HEPA filtration system, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:

  • You can purchase a stand-alone unit to keep in certain rooms or you can add HEPA filter to your HVAC system for the entire house.
  • If you choose to add a HEPA filter, be sure to do seasonal maintenance as well. You will likely have to hire an HVAC pro to make significant modifications to your HVAC system (such as a stronger blower motor) so the HEPA filter doesn’t restrict airflow.
  • Look out for the filter’s Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). Ranging from 1-16 for residential filters, this rating tells you about a filter’s capacity for catching small particles, with the efficiency rising with the numbers. But be wary, as MERV filters above 12 can restrict airflow. Most HVAC experts suggest using a mid-range MERV filter for a nice balance between maintaining air quality and airflow.

Fall allergies can be frustrating, but knowing how to protect you and your loved ones against exposure can make all the difference. Having a good air filtration system can provide an extra defense, as well as many other benefits.
