Ductless System Issues? Here Are 5 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Tips

Ductless System Issues? Here Are 5 Maintenance and Troubleshooting TipsIf you have a ductless mini-split heat pump or A/C, you have a cutting-edge HVAC system that should operate dependably and effectively for many years to come. But just like with any heating and cooling system, the homeowner should be prepared for potential problems. Later in this article, we’ll provide some ductless troubleshooting tips, but first here’s a brief explanation of how ductless systems work.

Explaining Ductless HVAC Systems

Often called a ductless mini split, this system’s main difference from a traditional forced-air HVAC system is explained in the name—they operate without ducts. So how does the air get to its destination? One or more indoor air-handling units, each containing a heat-exchange coil and fan, deliver conditioned air directly to the room where they’re located. The indoor units are connected to an outside compressor unit by a conduit containing power, refrigerant and condensate lines or pipes. This allows for independent temperature control in each area.

Ductless Troubleshooting Tips

If the ductless system is running but isn’t heating or cooling, try these steps:

  • Look at the air filter to make sure it’s not clogged with dust and debris. This can reduce cooling and heating performance.
  • Check for ice on the coils. If this is happening, you should contact your trusted ductless system technician. He’ll probably check the fan and blower for proper operation and take steps to melt the ice on the coils. He also should check the refrigerant level.

If the ductless system isn’t operating at all, try these steps:

  • Check the digital display for a fault code, then check the owner’s manual to see what it means. It may recommend calling a service person.
  • If no fault code is showing, look at the thermostat to make sure it’s set to the correct mode (heating or cooling).
  • Go to your circuit box and make sure a fuse hasn’t blown or a circuit hasn’t tripped.
