Simple Ways to Get the Most Savings From Your Programmable Thermostat

Simple Ways to Get the Most Savings From Your Programmable ThermostatA programmable thermostat is just like any tool. It functions best when used properly. For that reason, it’s imperative that you learn how to operate your device so that you can achieve maximum savings on your monthly energy bills.

Choosing a Programmable Thermostat

Start by selecting the right thermostat for your needs. There are four primary types of programming features available. You’ll want to select a thermostat that fits best with your lifestyle, travel schedule and climate.

  • 7-day model – The 7-day option allows you to program different heating and cooling settings for each day of the week.
  • 5-1-1 model – This model creates one schedule for the work week and a different schedule for Saturdays and Sundays.
  • 5-2 model – This type is identical to the 5-1-1 model with the exception that it only offers one setting for the weekend.
  • 1-week model – This thermostat model sets one heating and cooling plan for the entire week.

Once you’ve selected your thermostat, you’ll want to program it so that the heating and cooling cycle matches your lifestyle. Essentially, you want your HVAC systems to be operating while you’re home and not running while you’re away and your home is empty.

While you’re home in the winter, you should program the temperature to about 68 degrees. When you’re sleeping or away, set it to between 53 and 58 degrees.

In the summer, set the programmable thermostat so the air conditioner kicks on around 78 degrees. On those cool summer days when you don’t need the air conditioning, simply switch it off. Otherwise, it will turn on when you may not really need it.

When determining your settings, you should set the programmable thermostat to shut down the HVAC system about 30 minutes before you typically leave. The set it to turn back on about 30 minutes before you normally return. For sleep, set it so that it shuts off about an hour before bedtime.
