Be Sure Your HVAC Contractor Has These Certifications

Be Sure Your HVAC Contractor Has These CertificationsWhen you hire an HVAC professional to come into your home, inspect your system, and provide service or repair, you are putting a lot of trust in that person. You want to ensure that your trust is warranted. HVAC contractor certification can give you peace of mind that the professional you have hired is the right one for the job. Here are some qualifications to consider as you look for a contractor to service your air conditioner or furnace.

  • NATE certification — North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification shows that the HVAC technician has proven his or her knowledge in the field on a test.
  • HVAC licensing — A quality HVAC company will have a State of Arizona contractors license. Licensing is done on the state level through the Registrar Of Contractors. This license provides for proof of skills through testing, and a surety bond.
  • HVAC Premier Dealer certification — A Lennox Premier Dealer must maintain very high scores in a customer satisfaction survey conducted by Lennox.
  • EPA 608 certification – If a Technician works with refrigerant, he or she must have this certification. The certification proves the technician knows how to safely and properly handle coolant.

Are HVAC contractor certifications necessary? In the case of EPA 608 certification, yes, but for many others, the answer is no. The law does not require these certifications, but finding contractors who carry them will give you peace of mind as you have your system checked and serviced.
