After the Contractor Quote, What’s Next?

After the Contractor Quote, What's Next? | HansbergerDon’t feel alone if you find an HVAC contractor quote a bit bewildering. Replacing your system or facing extensive repairs isn’t something anyone commonly does. Not only that, HVAC systems are likely to be the most complicated system in your home. When you receive a quote, use these tips to navigate through the process.

  • Use comparisons. Reaching out to another contractor for the same job will help you establish a baseline for the overall cost and what the work involves.
  • Check the credentials. A low bid from a contractor who hasn’t earned a solid reputation may end up costing you more in the long run. Learn what the credentials for each bidding contractor are before you proceed.

In Arizona, HVAC contractors must have an active license, insurance and bonding. The manufacturer of your system may not honor the warranty if it’s not installed by a licensed contractor. Loss of the warranty could cost you thousands down the road. Look for the company’s reputation on the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB’s) website. The highest rating the BBB gives is A+.

HVAC contractors who have NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification have achieved the highest distinction in the HVAC industry for technical knowledge, performance, and customer service.

  • Get the details. Review the contractor quote thoroughly to learn if it’s an estimate or a fixed price before you sign the contract. If it’s an estimate, ask the contractor for situations that could make the price change.
  • Know what you’re getting. An HVAC quote should specify what equipment, brand, energy efficiency rating, and size is being installed. Don’t fall for bait and switch tactics or underestimate the value of a high-efficiency system and a quality installation. New systems last for 15–20 years, and compromising the decision just to save a few dollars will cost you more over time.

Reviewing a contractor quote will take time, but in the end, verifying the work and the contractor’s performance will pay off. For more information, contact Hansberger Refrigeration and Electric Company, a NATE-certified contractor, serving homeowners in the Yuma area.
