Troubleshoot Common Air Conditioner Problems, Then Call Hansberger

You can do some minimal air maintenance and repair work to your air conditioner. However, for anything above the basics, please consider calling in a professional. For the simple stuff though refer to the manual provided by the manufacturer before you begin.

An air conditioner that is not cooling may need cleaning. This will involve:

  • Remove any debris and cut back any foliage near the outside condenser.
  • Set the thermostat to the off position.
  • Remove the protective grille.
  • Use a soft brush to carefully clean dirt from the fins.
  • Use a hose and spray any remaining debris.
  • Replace the protective grille, turn the power back on and wait about five minutes before checking the air temperature.

An air conditioner that will not turn on may have circuit problems.

  • Set the thermostat to the cool position and a below room temperature.
  • Check the electrical panel and make sure that the breaker to the unit has not tripped.
  • You may need to replace a damaged fuse or reset the breaker.
  • Check to see that the power to indoor the furnace, the outdoor condenser or the 240 volt disconnect have not been turned off.
  • Any switches that are turned off should be turned back on.

Pooling near the air conditioner may indicate a problem with the condensate water flow:

  • Check the drain for any leaks that will need to be repaired or piping replaced.
  • You may have a condensate pump that carries the water away. Make sure it is working and plugged in.
  • A damaged pump will need to be repaired or replaced.
  • If the pump is working but not draining, check to see if the check valve is stuck.
  • Check for and remove any obstructions.
  • If the valve is clogged with algae, you may be able to use a long wire brush to remove the algae.
