Programmable thermostats are very helpful at helping you reduce your overall energy usage from month to month. They also give you a great deal of control over the comfort in your house, even when you’re not home.
Programmable thermostats are ideal for homes that are empty for at least four hours a day. When most people with traditional air systems leave their home, they’re faced with one of two dilemmas: Either they leave their HVAC system on and pay for hours of energy to keep an empty house comfortable or they turn off their air system and have to return to an uncomfortable house. Programmable thermostats solve both of these potential problems.
The settings for these thermostats allow you to set up a schedule for each day of the week directing when it should automatically turn on or off. You can set it to turn off right as you’re leaving for work each morning and then turn back on shortly before you plan on returning home. This schedule is easily adjusted to compensate for one-time changes that may pop up.
If you plan on going on vacation, most models have a “vacation” setting that will use a minimal amount of conditioned air to keep your house at a moderate temperature. Even after being gone for several days, you can set it to turn on shortly before you anticipate returning so you walk into a welcoming home.
By shutting down your air system when it’s unneeded, you are reducing the amount of wear and tear that your HVAC system endures. This will help avoid unexpected breakdowns and extend the life of your heating and cooling system.
Many programmable thermostats have other features that help you save money. For example, some have an automatic reminder that informs you when it’s time to change your air filter, an easy-to-forget task that will help keep your HVAC system working efficiently.
