Those Energy Tax Credits Are About To Expire — Now’s The Time To Make The Upgrades You’ve Been Considering

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading HVAC equipment in your home, now’s the time to do so, while you can still take advantage of federal tax credits. If you’re going to invest in new equipment, using tax credits will make the purchase much more affordable.

The tax credits set in place by the federal government are set to expire at the end of 2011. That gives homeowners someThose Energy Tax Credits Are About To Expire -- Now's The Time To Make The Upgrades You've Been Considering time to research energy-efficient equipment and explore what tax credits are available for them. As long as you have the qualified system of choice installed by Dec. 31, you’ll be eligible for the credit.

Current tax credits provide for a variety of equipment to qualify, including the following systems:

Air Conditioners

Central A/Cs that reach qualifying efficiencies are eligible for $300 in tax credits. Most homeowners use packaged systems, and these must begin at Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) 14. The cost of installing the system can also be included in the total price.

Heat Pumps

A $300 tax credit applies toward heat pumps powered by electricity that begin at Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) 8 and Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) 14 (for a packaged system). Again, installation is included in the total cost of the equipment.

Furnace

Forced-air heating systems are eligible for tax credits of $150. These furnaces can be powered by gas or propane, and should have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating starting at 90 percent.

Insulation

Upgrading home insulation is a great way to reduce the heating and cooling load in your home, and the government recognizes its contribution to energy efficiency through tax credits of 10 percent of the total price of your insulation purchase, capped at $500. The insulation you choose must comply with the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). With insulation, however, installation (and labor) cannot be included in the capped price.
