What To Expect Of Your Service Technician When He’s Diagnosing An Air-Conditioning Problem

You should always have your air-conditioning system tuned-up at the start of the season, but sometimes, problems can arise that you didn’t expect.  Fortunately, a trained technician can usually diagnose the problem and recommend a solution.  There are certain steps a competent technician will take to ensure they diagnose your problem correctly.  Here’s what to expect from your serviceman as he attempts to make a diagnosis.

  • Check the refrigerant level.  Depleted refrigerant is the most common cause of air-conditioning trouble, so it should be checked first.
  • Check for refrigerant leaks.  If the coolant is below the proper level, a technician should ensure there are no leaks causing a depletion of refrigerant at a faster rate than usual.
  • Capture released refrigerant.  Sometimes, when checking for leaks, the system must be drained of refrigerant.  Instead of illegally releasing it into the atmosphere, a responsible, Certified, properly equipped technician will capture it to re-use or dispose of.
  • Seal duct leaks.  Air travels through ducts before it’s released from the supply vents to cool your home.  Inadequate cooling could be due to leaky ducts, and a trained technician will know how to check for and fix such leaks.
  • Measure airflow through the evaporator coil.  This interior component of your air-conditioning system should be checked for proper function.
  • Inspect the electrical control sequence.  These can be skewed and allow the heating and cooling system to operate simultaneously.  A technician should make sure this can’t happen.
  • Verify electrical terminal connections.  These should be cleaned and tightened by the technician.
  • Check belts and motors.  If needed, belts should be tightened or replaced if they are worn excessively and motors should be oiled.
  • Inspect the thermostat.  When you set the temperature in your home, you want to know the thermostat is giving you an accurate reading.  A technician can verify this.
