Why Look For The Energy Star Label When You’re Choosing A Heat Pump? Here’s Why

Although the summer heat is months away in southwest Arizona, it’s not too soon to think about finding a more efficient way to heat and cool your home throughout the year. If you’re in the market for a heat pump, consider an Energy Star rated unit that can save you considerable money during Yuma’s long cooling season to keep you more comfortable and lower your electric bills.

In order to receive the Energy Star label, a heat pump has to meet stringent U.S. Department of Energy guidelines. The guidelines stipulate that HVAC equipment has to be at least 9 percent more efficient than other units on the market and may be as much as 20 percent more efficient than older units currently in homes.

Heat pump manufacturers have to demonstrate the improved energy efficiency to earn the label and do so by using a combination of technologies that cut the electrical usage. Qualifying heat pumps on the market now may have features such as:

  • Variable-speed motors for air handlers, which use much less electricity to circulate the air through your home. They run at slower and often continuous speeds, reducing the noise your air handler makes and removing more humidity, important during the monsoon season.
  • Dual-speed motors in the outdoor compressor adjust to outdoor conditions. These use less energy during milder conditions when you still need heating or cooling, saving electricity.

Scroll compressors extract more heat in the winter and summer than piston compressors, lowering your electric bills.
