Sealing The Ductwork: The 5 Benefits You’re Bound To See

Sealing the ductwork in your home is one relatively simple thing you can do for your cooling and heating system that can bring about substantial benefits. They include:

  • Sealing ducts can help improve the air quality in your home by keeping out pollutants and irritants such as chemical fumes, insulation parties and dust that can aggravate health conditions like asthma and allergies. When ducts are run through unconditioned areas such as garages or basements, air carrying these pollutants can get sucked into holes and cracks in the ductwork.
  • Ductwork with leaks can cause backdrafting, in which combustion gases, such as carbon monoxide, from gas appliances enter living spaces instead of being properly drawn outdoors as intended.
  • Sealing the ductwork can eliminate uneven cooling and heating in your home, such as some rooms that are hotter or colder than others. On a hot Southwest Arizona summer day, you don’t want to spend much time in a room that isn’t getting properly cooled.
  • Protecting the environment is another benefit. You can reduce air pollution by sealing ducts and thus reducing how much energy goes into cooling and heating your home.
  • You can save significantly on cooling and heating bills simply by sealing and insulating ducts. The measures you take to ensure energy efficiency in your ductwork can pay for themselves in lower energy bills.

According to the federal Energy Star program, holes, leaks and poor connections in ducts can cause a typical house to lose up to 20 percent of the air that flows through its ductwork. The program recommends that homeowners seal ductwork with mastic sealant and insulate ducts that run through areas that are not heated or cooled.

In addition to sealing the ductwork in your home, we recommend annual maintenance checks for your heating and cooling system. The best time is usually in the spring before the high-use cooling season, and in the fall before the heating season, though if it’s been more than a year since you’ve had your system tuned up, there’s no time like the present.
