This is the time of year to think about upgrading your air conditioner, especially with the hot southwest Arizona summer right on our doorstep. Do you remember those utility bills last year? New A/C units are often up to 40 percent more efficient than older models, and that number can be even higher for inefficient systems. However, you need to know how to pick the right model.
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a good place to start but it only tells you the ratio of cooling power to energy consumed in a typical year. With the high temperatures we have, you need more information and advanced features:
- Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) – Like the SEER rating, this rating tells you the ratio of cooling power to energy consumed but it’s for high temperatures when the machine is running at or near full power. It’s more relevant than SEER during the summer months.
- Variable Speed Air Handler – Air handlers that only run at full speed are less effective at controlling humidity levels. When moisture is at the proper levels, you will be more comfortable and can set the thermostat a few degrees higher.
- Quiet Operation – When a machine operates quietly, it’s usually a sign that it is a high-quality product and there are no problems. Plus, it’s nice having less noise.
- Fan-Only Mode – There are times when your air simply needs to be circulated. It makes no sense to pay for the energy to run the entire system when it’s unnecessary. Also, the fan should run for a few minutes after the compressor shuts off so the newly-cooled air can be circulated.
- Filter Check Light – A clean filter is 15 percent more efficient than a dirty one. It is highly useful to have a light to remind you when it’s time to change or clean your filter.
