Vacationing? Tend To These 5 Home Maintenance Musts Before You Drive Off

For most of us, our house is the largest single investment we ever make. While we’re usually careful with the routine home maintenance that keeps things like our HVAC system working safely and economically, “out of sight, out of mind” can lead to costly mistakes while vacationing.

HVAC tips. Either turn the HVAC system off, or – if it’s summertime – adjust the thermostat to 85 or 90. In our very hot climate, you probably don’t want to turn your A/C off completely, since the resulting intense heat can damage your posseVacationing? Utilities. Switch off hard-wired equipment like the water heater, and unplug appliances that create a “vampire drain,” such as microwaves with clocks, TVs and stereos that have a component waiting for the signal from the remote control, and computers with cooling fans. If you have a security system, ensure it’s functioning well, and don’t turn off the power supply to your pool’s filtration system. Turn the city water off at the main valve; unattended leaks can cause catastrophic damage in a few minutes, let alone over several days.

Security. Use timer switches to operate a few lights, making the house appear occupied. Arrange for your mail to be held at the post office; an overflowing mailbox is a sure sign that a home is unoccupied. A mounting pile of newspapers and magazines in the driveway is also a signal to burglars, as is an unmowed lawn.

Fridge/Freezer. Check the contents of your fridge to see if it can be emptied and switched off while you’re away. If it can, clean out the chiller cabinet, then leave the door cracked open to prevent mold and bad smells taking hold. Remember that unplugging the unit also cuts power to the freezer, so this advice applies only if it, too, is empty.
