Monsoon Season Is Here Again — Have You Prepared?

The Arizona monsoon season brings high winds and torrential thunderstorms, accounting for more than one-third of the region’s annual rainfall. Our usually low humidity climbs as high as 50 percent and high winds blow during monsoon season, causing serious water and wind damage. Whether you’re a long-time or new resident, here are some steps to take to prepare your home and property for extreme weather events during the monsoon season:

  • Check your property when a storm alert is broadcast. Remove any dead or dying tree branches and trim back heavy branches overhanging the roof. Check for and repair any loose roofing tiles or shingles, particularly around chimneys, vents and near rain gutters. • Schedule an inspection/maintenance for your large home heating and cooling units and have your electrical fuses or breaker control panels inspected by a certified HVAC technician. Plan alternate routes to and from work or school, especially if your usual route involves crossing a wash. Flash floods are fast and happen without warning. Gas up at least one vehicle and park it safely in the garage.
  • Heavy storms often cause electrical power outages, so keep basic emergency supplies at hand, including batteries, flashlights and candles, a battery-operated TV or radio, at least one gallon of bottled water per person, canned and dry foods, a well-stocked first aid kit, and any extra medications or health-care items for infants or elderly family members.
  • Turn off or unplug any major appliances, computers, air conditioners and televisions during a power outage to prevent power surges and electrical circuit overloads when the power is restored. Leave at least one light or lamp on to alert you that the electrical problem has been repaired. Stay indoors unless otherwise advised by local authorities; flash floods, flying tree branches, outdoor furniture and other wind-blown items can cause serious injuries.
