Dust in your home can be anything from a minor annoyance to a persistent health hazard, especially for people with allergies or respiratory ailments. There are many tactics to control indoor air quality, but getting your home as dust-free as possible is among the most effective. Consider these steps to remove dust from the air you breathe:
- Make sure you have efficient filters on your air conditioner and furnace. Electrostatic filters are by far the most effective at capturing dust, but their high cost can make them impractical for many households. For a much more cost-effective solution, a wide range of residential filters balance cost with performance.
- Maintain the filters on all your HVAC appliances. Remember that you should be inspecting these filters monthly for best performance, and that your maintenance needs will vary according to factors such as the number of people in your household, the size of your home, the presence or absence of pets and smokers, and other concerns.
- Make sure to capture dust when you’re cleaning. Feather dusters and similar tools don’t get rid of dust; they just knock it around. Clean with a wet cloth or something designed to capture and hold dust for disposal.
- Vacuum or dust all your horizontal surfaces, not just shelves and floors. Dust gathers on upholstered furniture, the tops of appliances, inside closets, and in other places that might get passed over in your cleaning.
- Use garment bags to protect clothing you don’t wear often. Clothes shed fibers that become part of your household dust, and stashing special-occasion garments in garment bags will not only protect them, it will help to capture those fibers.
