How to Know When the Ductwork Needs to Go

In the cool of an Arizona night or a blistering Arizona noon, your old ductwork could be effectively blowing money outside your home in the form of wasted energy. You work hard to provide for yourself or your family, so don’t let leaky, worn ductwork pick your pockets. If any of the following apply to your duct system, you’ll know it’s probably time for your ductwork to go.

What to Look ForHow to Know When the Ductwork Needs to Go

If your duct system isn’t easily accessible or your busy life precludes checking things out yourself, the sensible thing is to call in professionals who can scope out and identify worrisome areas for you. You may have duct problems if you see or experience:

  • Temperature fluctuations in airflow coming from the vents inside your home
  • Evidence of dirty, dusty or sooty insulation around ductwork
  • Corroded, rusty areas around duct joints
  • Drastically reduced airflow inside your home
  • Loose joints or seals
  • Ducts in attics or crawl spaces that lack insulation

Separated ducts can reduce the flow of heated or cooled air into your home for the simple reason that most of that expensive heated or cooled air is leaking outside the duct system. Loose or rust-corroded joints and seals can also indicate energy loss. Some ducts may lead to nowhere, closed off during initial home construction because of poor planning. A too-cold or too-hot room is probably a victim of ducts with nowhere to turn.

Solutions

The situation isn’t hopeless. Have the entire duct system checked by HVAC experts using a pressurized duct blower test that can determine where trouble spots abound in and around the duct system.
