Forced Air Furnaces: Still the Most Popular Way to Heat Your Home

Forced air furnaces heat nearly 35 million American homes, making it the most common type of heating system in the country. Forced-air furnaces are popular for several reasons. First, they’re very easy to install and can share ducts with a central air conditioning system. That means the forced air furnace doesn’t need any new or additional ductwork. A forced air furnace should heat your entire home quickly as it pushes gas- or oil-heated air through the ducts and out through vents in individual rooms.

Another attractive feature of forced air furnaces is their ease of use efficiency. A thermostat allows a homeowner to easily control the desired temperature. The furnace then self-regulates its operation by kicking on when the home fallForced Air Furnaces: Still the Most Popular Way to Heat Your Homes below the set temperature and shutting off when the home is sufficiently heated. A forced air furnace marked with the federal Energy Star logo will be at least 10 percent more efficient than other furnaces, as it enjoys a heating efficiency rating (as measured by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) of 90 percent or higher.

A forced air furnace starts working when the home’s temperature dips below the set temperature on the thermostat. The furnace then draws cold air from the home through vents in individual rooms and through the home’s ducts. The furnace heats the air and then redistributes it through the home through the same duct and vent system.
