Programmable Thermostat Acting Up? Some Advice

One of the best ways to improve the comfort of your home and lower your energy bills is to install a programmable thermostat. However, like any other piece of technology, thermostats occasionally stop working. While there are many reasons a programmable thermostat might not function properly, complete the following steps to identify simple issues that can easily be fixed.

  1. Start with the batteries. Before you start pulling your hair out trying to figure out what’s wrong with your thermostat, replace the batteries. If you have a unit that is wired straight into the HVAC system, skip this step. Turn your unit “off” using the settings on the console before changing batteries.Programmable Thermostat Acting Up? 2. Settings are important. For your A/C to come on during the summer, check that the set temperature is lower than the temperature in your home and that your thermostat is set to cool.

  3. Replace the fuse. Start by finding the fuse and the circuit breaker for your thermostat. If the fuse is damaged, replace it. If the circuit breaker was tripped, toggle it to reset it.

  4. Try the heat. If the A/C won’t activate, it’s possible that the problem lies with the A/C, not the thermostat. Change the settings to try and turn on the heat. If the heat won’t come on either, your thermostat is probably the issue.

  5. Replacement. At this point you can either call in a professional or replace your thermostat. Replacing the unit will fix nearly all problems, but if it doesn’t, you will have to call in a technician.
