Rx for Dust: Tips That Will Help You Breathe Easier

Dust exists in every home and tends to quickly settle on various surfaces, creating an untidy effect. However, dust not only creates an aesthetic problem but may also represent a health hazard, especially for people suffering from asthma, allergies or other respiratory tract problems. In dry, desert areas like Yuma, it may be even harder to deal with dust problems. To help you  better control indoor air quality, here’s our recommended Rx for dust:

  • Leave your shoes at the door – This is one of the simplest methods to reduce the amount of dust in your hRx for Dust: Tips That Will Help You Breathe Easierome. Shoes can bring large amounts of dust and debris into your home, and leaving them at the door may significantly reduce your home’s dust levels.
  • Replace or clean HVAC air filters – The filters on your A/C, heat pump or furnace should be inspected once a month and replaced or cleaned as necessary to ensure clean, dust-free indoor air. In our dusty area, you’ll probably be replacing or cleaning the filter during that monthly inspection. Use a marker to write the date on the filter edge, so you easily remember when you’ve last cleaned or replaced the filter.
  • Seal any air leaks – Outdoor air can enter through any existing air leaks in your home’s perimeter, bringing dust into your home. Sealing the air leaks lowers the amount of pollen and dust entering your home and also helps save on energy costs. Leaky ducts should also be sealed to prevent dust from being circulated throughout your home.
  • Make sure your clothes dryer is vented to the outside – Start by checking if the vent duct is properly attached to the dryer. Then, make sure nothing is obstructing the vent duct, including lint. Look for any holes that may leak air.
