Use the following tips to take full advantage of your thermostat’s features and create a pleasant home environment:
- Preset temperatures wisely – When using a programmable thermostat, you’ll be able to preset different temp
eratures for different times of the day or night. During the winter, a typical setting would be 68 degrees between 6 and 9 a.m. and from 5 to 11 p.m. During the day when you’re away at work, you can set the thermostat at 60 degrees. Use the same strategy during the cooling season. - Set lower temperatures while away – As mentioned, during times when you’re normally not home, you can set the thermostat several degrees higher (during cooling season) or several degrees lower (during heating season) to save on energy costs. With every degree you adjust the thermostat higher or lower than you want it, seasonally, you can save up to 3 percent on bill costs. Set the thermostat to start warming up your house approximately one hour before your arrival home, so you can enjoy a comfortable environment.
- Use overrides rarely – Overrides allow you to make temporary adjustments to your home’s indoor temperature. However, the override is canceled when another preset program begins, and overriding the system too often may result in increased energy bills.
- Adjust the temperature slightly – If you do feel the need to override the pre-set program, do not select an extremely low temperature to cool down your home faster. This will only make your HVAC system use more energy, and it won’t arrive at your desired system any faster. Plus, you may forget you turned the temperature down so low.
