Effective Home Energy-Saving Tips to Use This Winter

Although your winter energy bills may not be as sky-high as they are in the summer, these home energy-saving tips can help you lower your energy consumption during the cooler months. Home improvements and maintenance chores can make a demonstrable difference in your home comfort year-round.

Increase attic insulation. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends installing 10 to 20 inches of fiberglass batEffective Home Energy-Saving Tips to Use This Winterts or blown-in insulation in Arizona homes to slow heat transfer year-round. If you choose fiberglass, adding more is better, since recent research has found that as temperatures rise, the ability of fiberglass to resist heat transfer falls.

Seal air leaks. Look around windows outside for cracks between your home’s exterior, sealing any gaps with caulk. Other likely spaces of air infiltration include your dryer vent, exterior door frames, recessed lighting fixtures that enter the attic, as well as around pipes, wires and cables entering your home.

Maintain the heat pump or furnace. Of all the home energy-saving tips, keeping your HVAC system in good running order saves you the most money in both the short- and long-term. Check your air filter and have your system serviced annually. HVAC professionals will clean and adjust your entire system, so that it operates as safely and efficiently as possible.

Tend to the water heater. By turning your water heater down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll save a good deal of energy. Draining a few quarts of water from your water heater will clear hard water deposits from the bottom that impede water heating, shortening your appliance’s lifespan.
