How Inspecting Your HVAC System Can Prevent Costly Problems

Maintaining your cooling system requires a two-fold effort from both you and your HVAC professional. Inspecting your HVAC system routinely will prevent problems down the road that are expensive to repair and leave you without cool air when you need it most.

What You Can DoHow Inspecting Your HVAC System Can Prevent Costly Problems

Make sure to check and change your air filter monthly if you run your system frequently. A clean filter traps the dust and airborne particulates that might otherwise cover the air handler’s components. This can cause the evaporator coil to freeze over and burn the compressor out, which is your system’s most expensive part to replace.

Remove the vegetation around the outdoor condenser and hose the condensing coil off throughout the cooling season. Vegetation can obstruct the airflow through the condenser, while dirt can slow down the cooling process, harming the compressor.

What the HVAC Pro Does

As the HVAC professional goes about inspecting your system, he or she will likely check the following components:

  • Its electrical connections. Over time, electrical components can corrode. Whenever wiring can’t make complete contact, it loses some of its ability to conduct electricity. An overly hot electrical component can start a fire.
  • Refrigerant level. Air conditioners require an exact amount of refrigerant to function at their most efficient. Too little refrigerant may freeze the evaporator coil and harm the compressor. Before adding more, your technician will test for leaks and seal them.
  • Coil and fan cleaning. Your technician will inspect and clean the evaporator coil inside your air handler, along with the blower fan to remove excess dust. Dust can slow your fan down and insulate the coil, negatively affecting the heat exchange process.
