5 Great Energy Saving Tips for Summer

5 Great Energy Saving Tips for SummerEnergy conservation and energy efficiency are two sides of the energy-saving coin. While efficiency means getting more done with less, conservation means cutting back on your energy use overall–which you can do without sacrificing your comfort! This summer, try the following strategies to save on energy in your home:

  • Don’t leave your stove on. Use your microwave or start grilling out. Not only will you draw less energy through your home, but you’ll also produce less heat that your A/C has to deal with.
  • Keep your fridge full. Air doesn’t actually like to keep its temperature, hot or cold. That means that if your fridge is mostly air, it will take on heat more easily and cost more for the coils to cool. If your fridge is full, it costs less power to keep everything cold, as strange as that may seem.
  • Turn back your thermostat. If you’re asleep or out of the house, you don’t need your A/C running at full blast. Turn back the thermostat when you can. A programmable thermostat can help you automate this.
  • Use your ceiling fans, and turn back the A/C. Your ceiling fan cools you through the wind chill effect and makes you feel up to 4 degrees cooler, which allows you to back off the A/C.
  • Insulate your water heater. If your tank water heater is uninsulated, it will continually shed heat into your home. That means it has to keep producing heat to keep hot water ready, and you’ll need to push the air conditioner a bit harder to stay cool.
