When it comes to choosing a company for HVAC service, repair or installation, you don’t want to pick just anybody. Your home’s heating and cooling system is its most valuable component, aside from the structure itself. Here’s how you can tell when a contractor falls short of basic customer service standards.
- They should look and behave professionally, both at the business and in your home. You shouldn’t entrust your furnace, A/C or heat pump to contractors who aren’t polite and don’t carry themselves professionally. On the other hand, appearances can be deceiving, so it’s important to have other expectations.
- Make sure the company’s technicians have proper certifications. It’s also a good sign if the contractor’s technicians have North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification.
- Flexibility is important; if the technician isn’t willing to work with you to fulfill special requests or seek to solve problems unique to your home, look elsewhere for good HVAC customer service. Be skeptical if a contractor too quickly urges a system replacement on HVAC equipment that’s less than 8-10 years old.
- Expect an inspection. If you have a major HVAC repair project or installation, the contractor should come to your home, assess your situation, and provide a written estimate based on the facts on the ground rather than a phone call.
- A trustworthy contractor should not ask for the whole payment up front.
- For an installation, a quality contractor will insist upon performing a heating or cooling load calculation (depending on the system) to ensure the new system is properly sized for the size and characteristics of your home. Don’t let the contractor get away with rule-of-thumb sizing (for example, based on your home’s square footage).
