Ductless System for Your Home Addition

Ductless System for Your Home Addition | HansbergerIf you’re planning an addition to your Yuma-area home, you know that there’s a lot to think about. But making sure to include HVAC planning in your thinking can guarantee your comfort in your new space, and one of the easiest ways to extend your home HVAC system is by using a ductless system in the new addition.

A ductless system doesn’t require you to expand or re-balance your home’s ductwork, which can involve costly remodels to your entire home. And it doesn’t require you to resize your central furnace and air conditioner. Instead, a ductless mini-split gives your new addition its own, high-efficiency heat pump, which can manage the temperature in the addition independent of the rest of your home.

There are a number of reasons to to consider a ductless mini-split. One reason is that ducts are generally wasteful; through ductwork leaks and insufficient insulation, many homes lose up to 30% of their heating and cooling energy to ductwork. Another reason is that if your addition has different heating or cooling needs compared to the rest of your home — for example, it’s a guest room which will only be used infrequently, or has more sun exposure which needs to be cooled — a mini-split system can address those concerns directly.

A ductless heat pump system consists of one or more interior unit connecting to an external unit. The indoor units are generally sleek, and can be mounted on the wall, floor, or ceiling. Unlike a window-mounted air conditioner, a ductless unit requires very little interruption in your house’s structure: they can usually be installed with only a three-inch hole in the wall of your room.
