As outdoor temperatures heat up into triple digits, the last thing you need is for your A/C system to take a sudden vacation and stop working. Sooner or later, however, you may need to call an HVAC technician to service, repair or replace your cooling or heating unit. To help ensure you receive an accurate assessment, estimate, and service, make sure your technician carries these HVAC certifications.
EPA Certification
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that refrigerants only be handled by EPA-certified technicians. The primary reason for strict rules and guidelines is that refrigerants can be hazardous to the environment when in the wrong hands.
Any time your HVAC technician is doing work on your A/C or heat pump compressor, condenser or evaporator, this major service or repair work often involves reclaiming, recycling and/or replenishing refrigerant. It’s bad for the environment and your pocketbook (refrigerant is very expensive) for refrigerant to escape into the air.
NATE Certification
The gold standard for HVAC certification is NATE. The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) non-profit organization has nearly single-handedly spearheaded the movement for a uniform set of principles, achievement and knowledge for HVAC service, repair, and installation.
A NATE-certified technician has undergone and passed rigorous testing in core HVAC services and at least one specialty service. Technicians must renew certification every two years or undergo a minimum requirement for documented continued education hours. When you see the NATE patch on your technician’s uniform, you can rest assured your technician is a true professional.
HVAC Excellence
HVAC Excellence is a prominent certification credential to look for in your technician. The mission of the HVAC Excellence organization is to validate technical education and improve competency of the HVAC workforce. Technicians may test and receive certifications for Professional Level, Master Specialist, and Specialty Certifications that validate techs’ knowledge of home efficiency, safety and sustainable concepts.
