The Importance of Buying an HVAC System, Not Just a Replacement Unit

The Importance of Buying an HVAC System, Not Just a Replacement UnitIf you’ve just learned that your HVAC system needs a replacement part or an expensive repair, you might be money ahead if you replace the entire system instead. Although the heating side of your system receives light use, the air conditioner runs tirelessly for months on end. Putting money into an aging or failing system might be a poor investment.

What to Consider

  • The system’s age. Most HVAC systems last between 12 and 20 years, and HVAC contractors use the 5,000 rule to determine whether it makes more sense to replace a part than the entire unit. Multiply the age of the system by how much the repair will cost. If it exceeds $5,000, it makes more sense to replace it.
  • It uses R-22. This refrigerant has been phased out by the U.S. EPA and it has become increasingly more expensive. By 2020, the only R-22 available will be from reclaimed sources, and its price will rise even more.
  • Your energy bills are rising. As heating and cooling systems age, they use more energy. If your energy bills have climbed for no obvious reason, your system could be reaching the end of its useful life.A new HVAC system will be more energy efficient, since the U.S. Department of Energy increased the minimum standards for air conditioners and heat pumps in 2015. The lower energy bills with a new system will help offset its cost.
  • Repairs are more frequent. It’s not uncommon for parts inside an aging system to break down in clusters. It doesn’t make financial sense to keep putting money into a system that contributes to high energy bills and doesn’t run dependably.
  • Your home isn’t as comfortable. When your HVAC equipment can’t keep up with the heating or cooling load, it’s probably time to replace it.
