At some point, you’ll need these basic HVAC tools to work in this rewarding field. As you plan your career, prioritize these indispensable items to get started:
- Cordless drills and bits. Make a cordless drill a priority, and you won’t waste your money if you splurge on it and its battery. Add a fourth-inch hex bit to your collection of bits, and you’ll be ready for every job you encounter.
- Refrigerant gauges. HVAC techs need these gauges to measure refrigerant levels in air conditioners and heat pumps during service calls.
- Sawzall. You may not need it every day, but when you do, it’s indispensable.
- A step ladder. Whether it’s a four- or eight-foot ladder, you’ll appreciate not having to unload an extension ladder for reaching areas just out of arm’s reach. A ladder with a shelf keeps your HVAC tools within reach.
- Digital thermometer. The instant digital-read gun-style thermometers are indispensable for reading temperatures and your toolbox should have this and a replacement battery.
- Extension cord. The cord should be 50 feet long and heavy duty, rated for outdoor use.
- Safety glasses. Protect your eyesight with eye shields. If you wear corrective glasses, consider getting prescription safety glasses.
Besides the tools noted above, make sure you assemble these smaller, handheld tools for everyday use:
- Multi-meter. All HVAC systems use electrical components and you’ll need a good multi-meter for tune-ups and diagnosing problems.
- Screwdrivers. Even though the cordless drill will eliminate some need for using screwdrivers, you’ll still need a set of flatheads and Phillips.
- Wrenches, pliers, sockets and an assortment of screws.
- Snips. At some point, you’ll encounter metal ductwork that is easy to cut with sheet metal snips.
- Tape measure.
- Awls.
- Tube cutter.
