After a few months of siting idle, you might run into spring HVAC problems when turning on the A/C for the first time. You might be able to identify the problem and find solutions if you experience any one of these four issues.
1. A tripped circuit breaker.
Head to the breaker box to check the circuit breaker for the HVAC system. Reset it and try it again. If it starts but shuts off repeatedly, contact your HVAC contractor. Circuit breakers are safety switches and when they trip often, it indicates there’s a problem with the system
2. Bad thermostat.
Nothing lasts forever, and neither will the thermostat, although they often last for decades. Unscrew the cover and replace the batteries. When the system still won’t start or it’s hardwired, the thermostat may need replacing.
If you can follow printed instructions carefully and have some basic tools, you may be able to change it yourself. Write down the brand and model number of your A/C system before heading to the store.
3. Contactor switch.
The contactor switch controls the operation of the outdoor condenser and indoor air handler. When the thermostat is set to “cool” and the temperature setting at least five degrees lower than the indoor air, the system should turn on.
If neither the condenser nor the air handler start, you may have a bad contactor switch. It’s located on the side of the condenser in a metal box. It’s an easy repair and one of the more common spring HVAC problems, but you will need to call your HVAC contractor, since cleaning or replacing isn’t a do-it-yourself project.
4. Dirty condenser.
If your system starts then suddenly stops, check the condition of the condenser. It may be blocked or overly dirty. Remove anything that’s within three feet of the sides of the condenser and close to the top. Hose the dirt and dust off the coils.
