Ways to Eliminate Odors from Your HVAC

Ways to Eliminate Odors from Your HVACYou probably recognize most odors and scents in your home — perfume, plants, cooking odors, and the like. Though, sometimes you come across a funky odor you really want to get rid of. When the odor is coming from your HVAC system, the quicker the better to be rid of the problem.

That’s why the professionals at Hansberger Refrigeration and Electric Company have compiled common problems and solutions for eliminating odors in your HVAC unit.

Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil in your A/C system is the component that removes the heat from your home’s indoor air. As warm airflow blows across the evaporator, cold refrigerant in the coil absorbs heat energy. This natural process of heat movement causes condensation on the coil from the water vapor in return airflow.

Over time, the evaporator becomes sticky due to the presence of water and the dust that sticks to the coil. Under these conditions, mold can develop and create musty odors blowing from your air vents. You can eliminate the mold and debris from the coil using a can of disinfecting coil cleaner.

Condensate Pan

As you inspect the evaporator coil for mold, mildew, and dirt, right below it is the condensate pan–another common place where HVAC odors originate. A small amount of water is usually present in the condensate pan, which acts as a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

Mix a 50/50 solution of bleach and water–about two cups–and pour it into the pan. This also destroys micro-organisms in the condensate drain line.

Air Filter

Check the HVAC filter to see if it is damp. The presence of water on the filter is cause for concern, in addition to creating odors. Water could be due to spillage from the condensate pan. If this is the case, call your HVAC professional. If the water is due to condensation forming, apply insulation panels to the return duct around the filter.
