All About HVAC Tape and How to Use it

HVAC tape is generally any tape that has been rated for HVAC applications. Not all tapes are created equal. With your HVAC system’s efficiency on the line, you want to make sure you work with the tape that’s ideal for the task at hand. Even if you have the right tape, failing to apply it correctly could still lead to costly inefficiency. Here’s a quick guide to using HVAC tape.

What to Look For When Choosing HVAC Tape

Tape performance can have a considerable effect on the HVAC repair or maintenance job you’re doing. To purchase the right tape, consider the factors below:

  • UL Listing — A tape that’s compliant with UL standards has the right adhesion and shear strength to remain in place for the life of your HVAC system.
  • Temperature conditions — Hot environments and extreme cold can both make tape lose its holding power. Make sure you choose a tape that’s suited for the environment you want to use it in.
  • Full system closure — Preventing air from leaking out is the top priority in all HVAC installations and maintenance jobs. Purchase a zero permeable tape that’s designed to provide total system closure.

How to Apply

Use these tips to apply tape to your HVAC components properly:

  1. Cut the tape from the roll if the length you need to work with is easy to handle. If you’re sealing a long length of material, then unroll a few inches of the tape at a time and apply it.
  2. While applying the HVAC tape, keep peeling back a few inches of the liner starting from the end you’re holding up.
  3. With the tape centered over the hole or seam you’re sealing, keep it smooth over even surfaces and conformed to irregular surfaces.
  4. When you finish applying the tape, wipe it down firmly using a squeegee for maximum adhesive contact.

When working with HVAC tape, avoid rushing yourself as that could lead to wasted tape and seams that aren’t airtight. If you need help with HVAC repairs or maintenance in the Yuma area, please contact us at Hansberger Refrigeration and Electric Company.
