Know These Smart Thermostat Problems

Your smart thermostat is an invaluable addition to your home. It keeps you comfortable, saves energy, and makes life much easier. However, every piece of technology has problems sometimes.

Here are a few common smart thermostat issues and what you can do about them.

Connectivity issues.

Your smart thermostat connects to the Internet, so it can be controlled via your smartphone or other device, as well as receive local weather data, and more. So, what if it won’t connect? Check your home’s Wi-Fi. Maybe there’s a bigger issue. It also could be that your thermostat wasn’t synced properly with your device, or that it lost the connection and needs to be synced again. Go through the instructions, step by step. If that doesn’t work, call your HVAC contractor.

Interface issues.

One of the most common smart thermostat issues is working with the interface, which allows you to control it, change settings, etc. You may find it to be confusing or difficult to navigate. There might be configuration settings that allow you to change how you display and interact with data to suit you better. If not, hopefully continuing to use the interface will help you get used to it over time.

Power issues.

Some smart thermostats don’t need a connection to your home’s power supply, running on a 24-volt battery instead. Unfortunately, the more components are running at once, the more power the thermostat requires. When this happens, the battery ends up falling short, causing your thermostat to malfunction. You may need what’s called a common wire. This serves as an additional power source, keeping your battery charged and ensuring that your device continues operating efficiently. Talk to your HVAC technician about installing one in your thermostat.

If you experience other problems with your smart thermostat, call your HVAC contractor to take a look. Have them examine it during your annual maintenance visit to make sure it’s working properly, and help you get the most out of it.
