Air Filters & Their Different Types

types of air filtersAir filters are an important part of making sure the air in your home is healthy to breathe. These filters can improve your indoor air quality, but they vary in terms of how effective they are. Find out more about different types of air filters, so you can choose the best one for your home in the Yuma area.

MERV Ratings

Minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) ratings refer to how many pollutants, allergens, and other particles air filters can catch. These ratings range from one to 16 overall. Keep in mind that filters with higher MERV ratings can lead to reduced efficiency in some residential HVAC systems, such as older ones.

Fiberglass Air Filters

These air filters are among the least expensive types, and you can easily find them in department stores and hardware stores. Fiberglass air filters usually have MERV ratings that fall between one and four. These filters are highly effective at catching bigger particles, but they generally don’t catch smaller ones, such as pollen or mold.

Pleated Air Filters

Pleated air filters are made from polyester or cotton and have a MERV rating between six and eight. These types of air filters are more efficient at trapping larger and smaller particles than fiberglass filters. Air filters that have more pleats are able to trap particles without putting added strain on your HVAC system.

Disposable Electrostatic Air Filters

These air filters have MERV ratings of ten or higher and are made of polyester. While they’re able to remove allergens from the air, including pollen, they have a higher cost than fiberglass and pleated filters. They might also reduce airflow, causing your HVAC system to work harder.

Washable Electrostatic Air Filters

These filters have MERV ratings of ten or higher and are cost-effective, since you can use them over and over. One drawback with these filters is that they can lead to mold growth if you don’t let them dry thoroughly after washing them.
