In Honor of Earth Day, Improve Your HVAC Efficiency

It’s important to be mindful of how much energy your HVAC system uses. As climate change becomes an increasing threat to our world, it’s more urgent than ever that you conserve, and what better time than Earth Day to start that journey? Here’s how your system can affect climate change, as well as some tips for improving HVAC efficiency.

Your HVAC and Climate Change

As with any appliance, the more energy it uses, the more fossil fuels are burned at the power plant and the more it contributes to climate change, increasing your carbon footprint and harming the environment. However, the biggest factor isn’t how often you use your system but how old it is. Even if they’re well cared for, HVAC systems gradually become less efficient over time.

Additionally, if your AC is older, it may still run on R-22 coolant, which has been found to be harmful to the ozone layer. As such, it was gradually phased out and replaced with the more environmentally friendly R-410A. However, some older systems still use R-22. Ask your HVAC technician to check.

Improving HVAC Efficiency

One of the biggest ways to lower energy use is with a new system. Look for one with the blue Energy Star label, which certifies that the unit saves money and energy over similar models — without sacrificing performance.

There are other steps you can take as well. Change your air filter regularly. When it gets clogged, airflow is decreased, forcing your system to run longer to heat or cool your home. A smart thermostat can help too, adjusting the temperature to match your schedule and turning off the air automatically when no one is home.

Finally, get your annual tuneup. Your HVAC technician will check your system to make sure it’s operating at peak efficiency. They can also suggest ways to lower energy usage and minimize your carbon footprint. We only have one planet, so we need to do what we can to keep it safe.
