These HVAC Filter Types Are Best When Buying New Equipment

With the arrival of summer happening soon, you want your AC system running at peak efficiency to keep your home cool and your energy bills down. One of the best ways you can help your AC run at peak efficiency is to use a good air filter and change it when needed. To help you choose the right HVAC filter types, we’ve put together a list of the most popular filter types.

HVAC Filter Types: Fiberglass Filter

HVAC filters made of fiberglass are your basic, no-frills filter. It is not recommended to use these cheap, disposable filters in your HVAC system. These filters do little more than capture the largest of dust particles while allowing harmful pollutants to circulate in your home and on your HVAC equipment.

HVAC Filter Types: Polyester Pleated Filter

Polyester pleated filters are medium-quality filters that do a much better job than fiberglass air filters. By design, pleated filters have a larger media screen that captures more airborne particulates than fiberglass does. These air filters typically need to be changed approximately every three months. However, if you use your AC everyday, check the filter after about two months.

HVAC Filter Types: Electrostatic Filters

Electrostatic HVAC filters don’t use a media such as fiberglass or polyester to capture airborne particles. Electrostatic air filters use an electrical field that attracts airborne contaminants to collection plates. The collection plates must be wiped clean periodically, and then they may be used again. Electrostatic filter systems should be installed by your HVAC professional.

HVAC Filter Types: HEPA Filters

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are the best air filters available. HEPA filters remove up to 99.97% of contaminants and particulates. However, HEPA filters would probably require a special modification to your HVAC system in order for your AC to be able to handle the large, dense filter. The filter restricts airflow, which requires a stronger blower motor to operate the AC effectively.
