How You Can Combat HVAC Energy Loss at Home This Winter

As the weather gets colder, it’s important to be aware of your heating system’s energy usage. HVAC systems are the biggest consumers of energy in your home, so to save money and reduce your carbon footprint, you need to reduce energy loss. Here are a few tips for combating HVAC energy loss this winter.

  • Change your filters. If your HVAC air filter gets clogged, it reduces airflow through the system. This forces it to run longer to warm your house properly, which not only wastes energy but wears out the system faster. A dirty filter also reduces your IAQ, leading to more dust and contaminants in your air. Check the filter regularly and change it every three to six months to ensure it continues to function properly.
  • Check for leaks. Air leaks cause significant energy loss as cold air enters the house and negates the warm air from the furnace. Have your HVAC inspector perform a home-energy audit to check your house for air leaks and then seal them to prevent HVAC energy loss.
  • Clear your vents. If there’s a room you don’t use often, you may be tempted to close the vents or registers in that room to cut off airflow. One less room to heat means less energy, right? Wrong. In order to function efficiently, your system needs all the vents open and for air to flow freely throughout the house. Also make sure the vents aren’t blocked by furniture or other obstructions, and clean them periodically to get rid of dust and debris.
  • Schedule your annual inspection. Probably the most important tip of all to help you prevent HVAC energy loss is to be sure to have your furnace inspected annually by your HVAC technician. They can check to make sure everything is in good working order and make any minor adjustments that may be necessary to ensure the system operates at peak efficiency. Additionally, if there are any issues, they can address them before they turn into major problems that require expensive repairs.
