Shopping for a new cooling system can be a difficult ordeal. There are so many different AC brands to choose from. How do you tell the difference? Which one is best for your needs? Here’s a brief guide to the most well-known AC brands on the market today.
- Carrier. Relatively quiet and cost-effective, Carrier ACs are easy to install and easy to maintain. The most efficient models have a 20.5 SEER rating, which can save money and energy. They’re not quite as reliable as some of the other brands on this list, but with regular maintenance, they should stand you in good stead.
- Lennox. Lennox AC’s are expensive but also very efficient, with a maximum SEER rating of 26. Most agree that it’s worthwhile for the performance they give. - American Standard. While many high-end ACs require specialized (and expensive) replacement parts, American Standard runs fine on generic parts, making maintenance and repairs easy and cheap. Units are relatively inexpensive and provide high efficiency, with a maximum SEER rating of 22. The only major drawback is that they can be very loud, so be sure to place the unit where it won’t bother you or the neighbors.
- Trane. A good mid-priced brand, Trane is reliable and efficient, as well as easy to install and easy to maintain. Lower-end models can be a little noisy, but the more efficient options, with proper installation, run much more quietly. However, while the brand is generally good, the warranty is somewhat lacking, and customer service isn’t always the best.
- Goodman. With a maximum SEER of 18, Goodman models aren’t the most efficient of the AC brands on the list, but their price point makes them great if you’re on a budget. Durable and reliable, these AC’s will last you a long time — as long as you ensure a proper installation.
