When it comes to your home’s Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, one of the most commonly asked questions is: How often should I change the air filter?
The main purpose of the air filter is to keep dirt particles from being pulled into the HVAC system and damaging the components, though some filters do offer an air purifying benefit. There really is no universal answer but there are several different variables to look at to help you make the best determination for your system.
Location
Where you live and the environment surrounding your home can impact how much dust or dirt may be in the air. Areas with a dusty environment (like Yuma), poor air quality, or a tendency for air pollution may require more frequent changes.
Type of Air Filter
Before you buy air filters, there are a few things to consider that will impact how often they will need to be changed. An inexpensive, fiberglass filter will keep larger dirt and debris from being sucked through the intake but will do little for the actual air quality itself. The cost of this type of filter reflects the fact that it will need to be changed more frequently – generally once a month.
A pleated, denser filter will improve air quality by catching the smaller particles. These are generally more expensive, but the cost is offset by the fact that you may only have to change them every 2 or 3 months. Be sure to take into consideration the age of your system as a higher density filter may cause an older unit to work harder and run more often.
Household Activity
The occupancy and activity within your home play a big role in how often you should change your air filter. Seasonal or unoccupied homes may only need the filter changed a few times per year. Furry family members and pets who shed a lot will increase the frequency your air filters will need to be changed. Activities like burning candles or smoking in the home will also impact filter changes.
Performing regular HVAC air filter changes can protect the longevity of your system, improve the air quality in your home, and save you money on your energy bill. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when deciding how often to change the air filter. Changing the filter is no replacement for regular HVAC system maintenance, but will help increase the life of your unit and the quality of the air it produces.
