Musty Rooms? Assess Your Return-Air Ducts

When you live in Southwest Arizona, it’s vital for your HVAC system to provide you with the cool air you need during the long hot summer. There are many things to consider when you want to get the maximum efficiency out of your system, but among the most important are the return-air ducts. If these ducts are not doing their job or your home lacks enough of them, you won’t be able to get your home as comfortable as it should be.

Why You Need ThemMusty Rooms? Assess Your Return-Air Ducts

One of the keys to the efficient operation of a HVAC system is air circulation. Return-air ducts perform this function in the cooling mode by drawing the hot air back to the unit  so the system can cool it again. Reverse that idea for heating mode.

Proper Use

Just having enough return-air ducts is not enough. They need to be properly positioned for them to function at their best:

  • Installation: The air from return-air ducts can be run through wall cavities and closet spaces, though it is usually better to use actual enclosed ductwork that will not leak
    • Sizing: The holes for the return-air grills, and the cavity or ductwork you use to carry the air, should be large enough to do the job

Making sure that your HVAC system can easily move the air throughout your entire home will save you money and make your home more comfortable. If you have any further questions, please contact Hansberger Refrigeration & Electric. We’ve been serving the Yuma area since 1952.
