A/C Troubleshooting Tips To Help You Keep Your Cool

The weather might be mild now, but in no time at all, it will be time to crank up the A/C in your Yuma area home. When that time comes, if your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be cooling as it should, your system may need a little maintenance or even repair. But before calling your trusted HVAC contractor to fix your air conditioning problem, try these A/C troubleshooting ideas first:

A/C Doesn’t Run

  • A/C Troubleshooting Tips To Help You Keep Your CoolIf your unit doesn’t run at all, there may be an issue with a blown fuse. Check your breaker box and all circuits to make sure everything is connected.
  • The issue could also be that the thermostat is set too high. Try to adjust the thermostat setting by five degrees until it engages. Also, make sure the thermostat fan isn’t set to “On” or “Fan Only.” It should be set to “Auto” unless you just intend to run the fan without the compressor.
  • If, after checking both of these areas, your air conditioner still won’t turn on, you may have an issue with your motor or compressor. In this case, a professional is required.

A/C Won’t Cool

  • When an air conditioner won’t cool, the issue could be a dirty filter or evaporator coil, or could be a blocked or dirty condensing unit outdoors. Clean all areas thoroughly and check for anything blocking airflow, either from the registers or around the coils.
  • If your system still will not sufficiently cool, your coolant level may be too low, or you could have a faulty compressor. Both of these issues will require professional help.

Uneven Cooling

  • The problem with uneven cooling may not be with your A/C at all. Leaky or damaged ducts can prevent cool air from arriving at its destination in your home. Check for leaks or damage in ducts you can access, and consider a professional ductwork inspection and cleaning service.
  • If you’ve found no issues with your ductwork, your air distribution system may need to be balanced. Call a professional for help.
