Buying a new or upgraded HVAC system comes with a cost, but there are certain factors that will affect how much you’ll pay for your new air conditioner or heat pump. Here are some factors and how they will affect HVAC costs:
- Cooling load: The cooling load of your home is the amount of cooling needed to keep the space at the temperature you prefer. To meet this load, you will need a cooling system that is properly sized — that is, one that has the functional capacity to produce enough cooling. Your HVAC pro can conduct a load calculation to determine your home’s cooling load, but in general, larger homes will require cooling systems with greater capacity, which will cost more.
- Equipment efficiency: HVAC systems are available that can reach extremely high levels of efficiency. In some cases, almost all of the energy used by the highest-efficiency models gets converted into cooling. If you purchase a high-efficiency HVAC system, it will cost more than a similar model with a lower efficiency rating. Keep in mind, however, that high-efficiency models cost much less to run, and the initial costs can often be recovered by about the halfway point of the system’s expected lifespan.
- Equipment quality: It’s the same in HVAC as in any other commercial area: the better the quality of what you buy, the more it’s going to cost. Brand names can also affect costs of HVAC equipment, with more popular brands typically costing more. The benefits of purchasing high-quality equipment include better performance, higher efficiency, and longer service life.
- Ductwork needs: A new HVAC system may require additions or revisions to your ductwork, the pipes that carry cooled air throughout your home. If the ductwork needs to be changed or expanded, that will add to the final cost of your HVAC purchase.
