Have These AC Troubleshooting Tips at Hand This Summer

Person adjusting temperature from the AC settings

Some AC troubleshooting hints may help pinpoint problems and perhaps identify a solution without professional help. If it turns out that you’re unable to resolve the issue yourself, however, you’ll still be more prepared to accurately describe the situation to the qualified HVAC technician who arrives to restore full cooling function. Should you find yourself losing your cool this summer, here are a few basic AC troubleshooting hints that might — or might not — be a fast fix to restore comfort.

The Thermostat

Verify that the system is turned on and set for “Cool” and not “Heat.” Check the temperature setting. Make sure the desired setting is correct. Perhaps someone else in the house altered the temperature?

Is It Getting Power?

Go to the house circuit breaker and look for any circuit breakers that might have been tripped. Usually, the AC circuit breaker will be labeled. If it’s turned off, switch it back on and see if the unit starts up. This is often a key AC troubleshooting fix. If the circuit breaker trips again, leave it off and call for professional help.

How About Airflow?

If your air conditioner is running normally but the airflow coming out of the vents feels weak, check the condition of the system air filter. If it’s dirty, install a new filter and see if airflow improves.

Air Not Cool Enough?

Make sure the outdoor AC unit is getting adequate air circulation on the sides and top. Look for falling leaves or encroaching vegetation that may be impairing airflow into or out of the unit. Make sure no one has placed any objects on top of the unit, which will block air entering the condenser coil.

Ice on the Indoor Coil

If ice formation is visible on the indoor evaporator coil, cooling performance declines rapidly and the unit may eventually shut down automatically. Any ice on an AC component is evidence of a malfunction like low refrigerant levels due to a leak. Turn off the unit at the thermostat and call your HVAC contractor.
