How Long Can You Go Before Scheduling HVAC Maintenance?

HVAC MaintenanceYour HVAC pro will caution you to never skip HVAC maintenance on your equipment in spring or fall. As they will warn you, regular maintenance likely will ensure that small problems will be discovered before they become big, costly problems. So despite the fact that you will probably pay something for a service visit, in the long run, it could be far less than it might cost you for a big repair bill.

And, the fact is, as your equipment ages, HVAC maintenance becomes ever more important. Things are likely to wear out and require maintenance, so don’t be tempted to skip either spring or fall service visits.

Below are some of the things that are most likely to go wrong and need HVAC maintenance.

  1. Air filter. Changing the air filter is the single most important thing you can do to ensure that your HVAC keeps running right. A clean filter allows for better airflow, which will help the HVAC to work more efficiently. That means there’s less friction on parts, and they will last longer. Furthermore, a clean filter will help ensure the air conditioner coils don’t get dirty and freeze up, causing the AC to fail to cool the home. So if you are unable to change your air filter, get your HVAC pro to do it for you.
  2. Refrigerant charge. One of the things an HVAC pro will check is the refrigerant charge. The AC needs a certain amount of refrigerant to work right. If the refrigerant levels aren’t where they should be, the tech will add refrigerant and also check for a leak. Leaks should be repaired right away.
  3. Clogged condensate drain. The AC condensate line is where moisture from the home is removed and sent away from the home. Over time, it can develop sludge from mold, fungus, moisture, and dirt. The service tech in spring may pour bleach into the line to ensure it stays clear. Sometimes, the line will need a more intensive cleaning to loosen a clog.
