How to Tell If You’re Getting Correct Thermostat Readings

Thermostat ReadingsYour thermostat should show the right temperature whether you have your air conditioning or heating system on. When something is wrong with your thermostat, it might show a temperature that doesn’t match the actual temperature in your Yuma home. If this happens, your home might seem too warm or too cold compared to the thermostat readings you’re getting.

Checking Your Thermostat Readings

How do you know if your thermostat is showing the wrong temperature? If you have a digital thermostat, paper towel, and tape available, you can easily check. Tape a piece of paper towel next to the thermostat on your wall, then tape the digital thermostat to the piece of paper towel. Wait about 15 minutes, then compare the thermostat readings. Your wall thermostat should have the same reading as the digital thermostat.

What to Do About Incorrect Thermostat Readings

You can take a few steps to make sure your thermostat is able to show the right temperature. You might need to move it to an area where it won’t be exposed to direct sunlight or any drafts. Ideally, thermostats should be on an interior wall away from windows and doors. Your thermostat should also be level on the wall. If you’re still getting an incorrect reading, check the inside of the thermostat for dust. Clean it off as needed, then check it again.

When to Replace Your Thermostat

Have an HVAC technician inspect your thermostat if you can’t get it to show an accurate temperature. If your thermostat can’t be repaired or if it’s an older model, replace it with a new thermostat. A programmable or smart thermostat can keep your home comfortable while also cutting back on energy usage. HVAC technicians can help you choose the best thermostat for your home and ensure that it’s installed in the ideal location.
