Know How Your AC Works to Cool Your Home’s Inside Air

A common misconception about air-conditioning systems is that they make homes comfortable by creating cool air. That’s not true. They instead cool your home by drawing indoor heat and transferring it outside. Keep reading to gain some valuable insight into how your AC works.

The Thermostat

When the indoor temperature is at your desired level, the thermostat senses this and shuts off your air conditioner. When your home heats up again and the thermostat senses that the temperature should be lowered, it sends signals to your indoor and outdoor AC components to turn back on to start the cooling process.

Heat Absorption

Your AC works to draw warm indoor air through your return air ducts. The air first passes through the filter, which removes airborne particles such as dust and lint. The filtered air then passes over the indoor AC unit’s cold evaporator coil, which contains liquid refrigerant.

The refrigerant absorbs heat from the passing warm air while changing from a liquid to a gaseous state. A blower fan pumps the now-chilled air into your home’s ductwork for distribution throughout your home.

Heat Transfer to the Outside Air

The refrigerant gas travels through a copper tube to your outside unit’s compressor. Your compressor acts like a huge electric pump, pressurizing the refrigerant and sending it into the condenser coil, where it’s exposed to outdoor air. The AC works to pull outdoor air through the coil by a large fan absorbs the refrigerant’s heat and releases it outside. During the process, the refrigerant changes back from gas to liquid.

The cold refrigerant flows back to the indoor unit to absorb more heat. This cycle continues until your indoor temperature reaches your preferred level.

As you can see, your AC works by having several components work in sync to cool your home’s air. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep up with regular maintenance and have repairs done properly when necessary, so the parts work correctly and efficiently.
