If You’re a Homeowner, You Should Know These HVAC Tips

During the long, hot summer in Yuma, we run our air conditioners day and night. Often, Yuma homeowners run the AC starting in spring and keep them going well into the fall — and then there are those occasional cold spells when we need the heat. With that much use, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the conditions in your home that impact your HVAC system. With the goal of getting the most efficient operation out of your system, here are some valuable HVAC tips.

  1. Change the air filter. This is the single most important of all the HVAC tips to ensure the efficient operation of the HVAC. A clean filter helps the air flow better, thus avoiding friction between the working parts, which may lead to damage and a system breakdown. A clean filter also saves you money, as the system will struggle less to heat or cool.
  2. Keep it clean and clear around the indoor and outdoor parts of your HVAC. Clear away all weeds, grass, leaves, or other refuse around your outdoor condenser. Clear away vegetation so that the unit has at least 2 feet around it without any obstructions. Clear away lawn furniture, toys, or anything else that might blow against and damage the unit. Indoors, make sure there are no rugs, furniture, drapes, or other impediments preventing the free flow of air from the vents.
  3. Monitor the thermostat. Make sure the wires to the thermostat are connected and that they are not worn or frayed. If you use batteries in your thermostat, be sure to change them as needed. Consider upgrading to a programmable or Wi-Fi thermostat so you can set an efficient program and cut back on energy use by 7 or 8 degrees at least eight hours a day, when the home’s residents are away or asleep.
  4. Schedule preventative maintenance. In the fall and spring, schedule preventative maintenance with your HVAC company to ensure the efficient operation of your system. Good system maintenance is one of the most important HVAC tips to prolong the life of your HVAC unit.
